A More Complete Education Encouraged and Supported by Skills & Employability Awards:
Recognising Learning & Achievement Gained Outside the Academic Curriculum
An internet search conducted in January 2021 suggests that at least 100 UK universities are providing their students with opportunities for a more complete education by encouraging, supporting and recognising learning, personal development, and achievements gained through experiences outside the academic curriculum. The commonest form of encouragement, support and recognition for these forms of learning, development and achievement take the form of co- / extra-curriculum award schemes many of which are focused on employability.
We are using the terms lifewide education and lifewide learning and development to signify this more complete form of education that embraces the academic, co- and extra-curricular opportunities for learning, skill development and other forms of personal development and achievement. We recognise that the terms, lifewide learning and education are generally not used in higher education institution but they do focus attention on the nature and contexts for learning and education.
Practitioners who are administering and supporting these schemes are an important part of the community we are seeking to serve and we have developed and are developing information resources that we hope will be useful to complement the resources provided by other organisations like AGCAS or Advance HE.
