Lifewide Learning in Higher Education
Lifewide learning pervades higher education regardless of whether an institution recognises it or not. Because lifewide learning is what students do as they engage in life experiences that extend beyond the institution. In those spaces they are learning, developing and achieving. Lifewide Education accepts this as a fact and seeks to embrace the potential for learning, development and achievement in students' learning lives.
Since the millennium, institutional support for and recognition of lifewide learning has grown rapidly in UK HE through the introduction of award schemes that recognise the learning, development and achievements that students have gained through co- and extra-curricular experiences. Through this educational innovation we believe that UK HE is orienting itself towards a future where “the whole of life is viewed as having potential for learning therefore education can have no ending” (adapted from Lindeman 1926).
People who are involved in the design, administration and support of these award schemes are an important part of our community and in 2021 we hope to work collaboratively with members of this community of practictioners.
Lifewide learning is the foundation for lifelong learning. The increasing attention given by policy makers to preparing learners for a lifetime of living and learning in a complex, turbulent and disruptive world means, a world means that that higher education has a crucial role to play in the development of a new culture of lifelong learning.
We aim to encourage and support this important educational development through our scholarship, research, publications and networking activities that are intended to encourage the exchange of ideas and practices between practitioners, institutions and policy makers.
